Don’t rush buying furniture!

We spend so much time looking for the right car and the right house that’s suitable for us. But when it comes to furniture, we end up rushing into decisions. Don’t spend minimal time choosing the right furniture for your home or office. This isn’t an impulse purchase. If you’re buying good quality solid furniture, it will last you a number of years. Sometimes longer than you can imagine.

Always check the quality of the furniture by running your hand over it. Don’t worry, you won’t ruin the finish, regardless of what they tell you (and anyways, if it’s so easily ruined, you know for sure that you shouldn’t put your hard earned money down!). If the surface feels rough or you can feel the edges/joints scraping your hand, then there is a lack of finishing in the product. If you’re choosing a piece made in teak or similar wood, it’s simple to do a quick test. Say if it’s a chair or a side table, lift it up. If it feels heavy then it’s probably a good, hard wood. A light weight usually signifies a cheaper or weaker wood/material, and you can be assured that it won’t last as long.

Do also check the comfort of the seat, if you’re buying a chair or a sofa. And the best way to do that is to sit on it! Now, you will find places where it will clearly say ‘Do not sit’. That sign isn’t meant to signify that you can’t actually do that. More often than not, it’s just a way to save the fabric/leather etc from getting dirty from grubby hands. Take permission from the salesperson and try the product comfort for yourself. Sometimes what looks exceptional, may not suit your body type or height. Trying the furniture is the best way to judge the comfort for the long term.
